This document outlines Descartes Systems Group's (“Descartes”) use of cookies, web beacons, and other similar technology (collectively referred to in this document as “Cookies”) on our various websites, as well as how users can manage those Cookies.

How Descartes uses Cookies on its websites

We use Cookies to manage user logins, maintain user preferences, improve the performance of the website or services associated with it, and anonymously track access and usage patterns

What are cookies?

Cookies are small text files which a website may put on your computer or mobile device when you first visit a site or page. The cookie will help the website, or another website, to recognize your device the next time you visit. Web beacons or other similar files can also do the same thing. We use the term “Cookies” in this policy to refer to all files that collect or store information in this way.

There are many functions cookies serve. For example, they can help us to remember your username and preferences, analyze how well our website is performing, or even allow us to recommend content we believe will be most relevant to you.

Certain cookies contain personal information – for example, if you register on our site, a cookie will store your username. Most cookies won’t collect information that identifies you, and will instead collect more general information such as how users arrive at and use our websites or a user’s general location.

What sort of Cookies does Descartes use?

Descartes may use Cookies that perform one or more of the following different functions:

1. Functional Cookies

These Cookies are essential in order to enable you to move around the website and use its features, such as accessing secure areas of the website. Without these Cookies services you have asked for, like secure login and reporting, cannot be provided.  They also serve to remember any customizations or preferences you have requested, including, where available, remembering usernames or changing the language or regional version of the website.

2. Analytical Cookies

These Cookies are used to analyze how our visitors use our websites and to monitor website performance. This allows us to provide a high quality experience by customizing our content and quickly identifying and fixing any issues that arise. For example, we might use performance cookies to keep track of which pages are most popular, which method of linking between pages is most effective, and to determine why some pages are receiving error messages. We might also use these cookies to highlight articles or site services that we think will be of interest to you based on your usage of the website.  These Cookies don’t collect information that identifies a visitor. All information these cookies collect is aggregated and therefore anonymous. It is only used to improve how a website works.

3. Marketing Cookies

These Cookies allow us to serve you with content that we believe is relevant to you and your interests. For example, behaviorally targeted Cookies allow us to collect data such as when you visit our website, the pages you visit, the amount of time you view each page, the links you click on, the searches you make and the things that you may interact with, and other factors to create a 'profile' that links to your web browser, allowing us to increase the effectiveness of our content.

We also use or allow third parties to serve cookies that fall into the three categories above. We may also use third party cookies to help us with market research, campaign tracking, improving site functionality, and monitoring compliance with our terms and conditions and copyright policy. For example, like many companies, we use Google Analytics to help us monitor our website traffic. We also partner with Microsoft Clarity and Microsoft Advertising to capture website usage data and online activity through cookies and other tracking technologies. Additionally, we use this information for site optimization, fraud/security purposes, and advertising. By using our site, you agree that we and Microsoft can collect and use this data. For more information about how Microsoft collects and uses your data, visit the Microsoft Privacy Statement.

Disabling Cookies

Cookies can be disabled.  In some circumstances you can disable only specific types of Cookies, while in other circumstances you may only be able to disable all Cookies.  When Cookies are disabled, some functionality may be lost depending on the Cookie.  For example, disabling Functional Cookies will result in being unable to complete certain functions like logging into secure areas or accessing certain content.

Do we track whether users open our emails?

Our emails may contain a single, campaign-unique “web beacon pixel” to tell us whether our emails are opened and verify any clicks through to links within the email. We may use this information for purposes including determining which of our emails are more interesting to users, to query whether users who do not open our emails wish to continue receiving them and to modify our distribution schedule. The pixel will be deleted when you delete the email.  You may opt-out from our emails at any time by clicking the opt-out link at the bottom of one of our emails, by managing your preferences on our website at www.descartes.com/emailpreferences, or by emailing us at info@descartes.com with a message or subject line asking to be unsubscribed from future mailing campaigns.
